Each year a half-dozen close friends, mostly in our eighties, organize a bicycle tour. In 2024, we rode along the Erie Canal Tow Path in New York. Two drove a van filled with bicycles and tricycles from Colorado to New York. Three flew to Buffalo and one drove his car from Indiana. We began our first full day by exploring Lockport and its historic locks.
I couldn’t help but join some old friends who helped build these famous locks.
On our second day, we biked from Lockport to Buffalo and back. On our third day, we biked from Lockport eastward to Albion. The following photo shows a location where a river runs underneath the canal through a large culvert.
We saw various bridges crossing the canal: lift bridges, counterweighted bridges, and some newer bridges that were high enough so that no movement was necessary.
The third day was our longest at about 50 miles. Our hotel in Pittsford was upscale and right on the Erie Canal. We watched the activity on the canal from the hotel dining room window. We ended our bike tour on the fourth day in Newark. There was much more action on the canal as we biked near Rochester.
