Heidelberg

On out third day in Frankfurt, we took a day trip to Heidelberg, then returned to Frankfurt for the night.

We spent most of our time at the castle, which overlooks the valley. As you can tell from this photo, our wireless listening devices had finally arrived. We could hear our tour leaders, at least when their mikes were properly aligned.heidelberg2 The castle had been built, destroyed, rebuilt, and so forth many times. In addition to tours, there are concerts and plays in the outdoor courtyard. This castle was more what I had in mind when I think of a castle; moats, draw bridges, fortified walls, and dungeons. The other castles we had visited were just too civilized.heidelbergThe museum was one of the most interesting parts of the castle. It was devoted so science and medicine.

Lunch, then back to Frankfurt for dinner at our hotel. Mostly what we did on this trip was eat. And drink. Always one beer or wine with lunch; two at dinner. The next day we left Frankfurt for Cologne, with a brief stop in Koblenz.
