Darel and Linda 2018

This was another busy year.  On January 2 we flew to Cabo San Lucas for a week with Kyle and Stef.

In February, we did our annual “trip of a lifetime” to the South Pacific. Our excuse was the fact that Sarah was working for a year in New Zealand. Such a trip requires too many hours in the air to travel to only one country, so we decided that while in the region, we would also visit Australia and Fiji.

Our first week was in northern Australia near Cairns. We learned that Koalas are not bears, crocodiles are more aggressive than alligators, and kangaroo meat appears on most restaurant menus.

We also spent a few days in Sydney, where we visited such things as the famous Sydney Opera House and Bondi Beach,

We next flew to Queenstown, New Zealand. We took a bus trip to Lake Te Anau and Milford Sound, then returned to Queenstown, where we shared several activities with Sarah.

After a couple of wonderful days with Sarah, we flew to the North Island, where we enjoyed more of this beautiful country and its friendly people.

We flew from Auckland to Fiji for the last few days of our trip to the South Pacific. Our resort was beautiful and uncrowded.

We actually stayed home for most of March and April, where we returned to our usual routine of exercise classes, golf, and weekend visits to our cabin. The last weekend in April, we took a short trip to Western Colorado with Janet and Allen. We stopped on the way to hike to Hanging Lake, one of Colorado’s most famous icons.

We sampled a local winery, spent the night in an historic hotel in Ouray, then explored some jeep roads nearby.

For Darel, his biggest accomplishment of the year was on May 15, when he got a hole in one on number 8 at Southridge Golf Course.

Since about 1993, a bunch of Front Range math professors and teachers have been meeting monthly at a local Old Chicago to drink a few brews and talk about the latest trends in teaching and learning mathematics. More recently, our agenda has largely switched from mathematics to health issues and biking. In May we attempted to ride the Cowboy Trail across Nebraska. Heavy winds and soft trails slowed us down, but we gave it our best effort.

With so many youth sports and activities, it is challenging to get together as a family. We managed to do so on Labor Day Weekend.

In September the Old Chicago gang did another bike tour. This was a lot closer to home. On Friday we did a warm-up tour in the Glenwood Canyon. Then the next day we rode from Aspen back down to Glenwood Springs.

The Montrose High School Class of 1958 had our 60-year reunion in late September. It was good to see so may old friends.

We had time in October for one more big trip before the end of the year. The Route of the Maya by Overseas Adventure Travel started in El Salvador and explored several Mayan sites in El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, and Belize. The Mayan ruins were incredible, but we saw so much more such as colorful birds, monkeys, the Spanish Colonial city of Antigua, Lake Atitlán, and the Barrier Reef in belize.
