We stopped attending Joint Mathematics Meetings in January. The January meetings had become for us an excuse to spend a week in a pleasant location such as San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco, or New Orleans. Boston just didn’t fit this mold.
Instead of attending the usual meetings, we spent a week in Mesquite, Nevada. Nearby are several golf courses and liking trails. This is something that we tried to do every year, either in Mesquite or nearby St George, Utah.
Sarah attended college in Lindsborg, Kansas and the past four years we had made the trip back and forth between Colorado and central Kansas several times. Her senior recital was a special occasion.
In September we took our first Alaskan cruise. We flew to Vancouver and spent a full day walking around the city and boarded the Island Princess the next day.
Lots to see along the way. Stops at Ketchikan, Jneau, Skagway, and Glacier Bay.
From the bright sky over Vancouver, the weather gradually worsened. On the last day of our cruise, the storms were so bad that our side trip to College Fjord was canceled and we headed directly to Whittier instead. After spending the night in Anchorage, we rented a car and drove north toward Fairbanks. This was very late in the tourist season, and a couple of the resorts locked their doors for the season as we checked out.
