On our anniversary on July 6, we rented a tandem bicycle and headed for the small town of Damme.
This was the first time that we had ever tried a tandem bike. Much of the route was on pavement that looked like a dedicated bike route, but was also used by cars. It was exciting, to say the least, to meet a fast-approaching BMW on pavement barely wider than the car itself.
Our ride was on a weekend, and there were many bicycles on our route, including several pelotons, each consisting of twenty or so riders. We had a booklet that described our route that included numbered intersections.
Our route took us past one of the few working windmills.
I was able to go inside and take some steep stairs to the third level. There were two six-foot stone wheels, visible in the lower left corner of the picture, that ground the flour.
We ended our special day by going out to eat with two of our fellow travelers.
This was the end of our adventure. The next morning a bus took us to the airport in Brussels for our long trip home.
Next time, we hope to go on a real river cruise.
